How Can I Be a United Way Volunteer?


Volunteers are the core of The Shelby County United Way, as well as the various member agencies and other non-profit and social service organizations. If you are interested in volunteering your time , please complete the Volunteer Interest form at the bottom of this page.


United Way Allocations Committee:
 Reviews and directs United Way resources to programs that address community priority needs; annually review United Way agencies and programs, and makes recommendations to the full Board on amount of funding for member agencies and programs.

  • Volunteers serve on Impact Area review teams (Investing in Children and Youth, Strengthening Families and Individuals, Promoting Health and Well Being, Enriching the Lives of Seniors and Caring for People in Crisis) that are responsible for monitoring and visiting the agencies and programs to ensure quality of services and accountability.

 

Events and Activities Committee:
Committee members may be Board Members or community volunteers who are not on the Board but have an interest or expertise in this area. Team members are responsible for the events and activities promoting the United Way, member agencies and their services. Some of the activities included are :

  • Producing a local campaign video and developing the annual campaign theme or multi-year theme promoting services.
  • Coordinating the Campaign Kick-Off, Finale, Enhanced Giving Event and any year-round event promoting the United Way and its services.

  • Designing the campaign pledge card and other campaign materials.

The following positions are by nomination only:

Board of Trustees:
Meets monthly and is charged with carrying out the SCUW mission to identify, evaluate, and make possible the human services in Shelby County. The Board develops all policies necessary for the legal and corporate existence of the agency, ensures the agency meets legal requirements for conducting the business of the corporation, adopts bylaws and revisions when necessary, adopts policies that determine the purposes, functions, and activities of the United Way consistent with the Mission Statement, determines and is responsible for internal policies which govern the operation of the United Way, and responsible for strategic planning that ensures the viability of the organization.

Executive Committee:
Meets monthly to formulate policy and procedural recommendations to the full Board of Trustees;manages the business agenda of the Board and strategic planning processes; consists of the officers of the Board including the President, 1st Vice-President, 2nd Vice-President, Immediate Past President, Treasurer, and Secretary.

Board Development Committee:
Cultivates prospective volunteers to serve on the Board of Trustees and volunteers to lead the annual campaign.

Finance/Audit Committee:
Reviews financial reports and matters involving the fiscal health and welfare of the organization; develops investment policies and monitors the campaign revenues and reserves on a monthly basis; makes recommendations to the full Board for investment proposals to ensure financial stability of the Shelby County United Way.

Special Projects Committee:
Special Project members are responsible for allocating funds set aside from each campaign to support innovative, ongoing, and "seed" programs in Shelby County that are needed by the community.
 
The grant cycle occurs during the first quarter of each year, and the team reviews competitive grant proposals submitted by community nonprofits who may or may not be United Way member agencies.  

Marketing Committee:
The Marketing Committee communicates the United Way Brand to the community through education and awareness. It is the purpose of the committee to make Shelby County residents more familiar with the mission, vision, and activities of the United Way. It also provides advice and support to special initiatives of the United Way.

Enhanced Giving Committee:
The Enhanced Giving Commitee's purpose is to develop and support new initiatives for the Shelby County United Way in the area of fundraising and development of new and potential areas of growth.
